Literature & Drama Tours
It may seem perverse to take that most solitary of intellectual pursuits, reading, and construct around it a tour for a group of twenty. And yet, what better way to gain a new perspective on a work of fiction than to see with one’s own eyes the places that inspired its creation? How better to become more closely acquainted with a text than to discuss it in the company of other aficionados, under the direction of an expert—or of the author themselves? All our small-group tours are led by expert lecturers, chosen for their companionability and communication skills as well as their scholarship.
Shakespeare & his World
- An exceptional theatrical experience: five Shakespeare plays, visits to related sites, talks and discussions.
- At Stratford with the Royal Shakespeare Company: King John, Julius Caesar and Richard III.
- In London: The Comedy of Errors at the Roundhouse and Henry V at the Globe, the reconstruction of the theatre where it was probably first performed.
Poets & the Somme
- First World War poetry in the context of the Battle of the Somme and the lives (and deaths) of the poets.
- A presentation of the poetry through a study of events, landscapes and the wartime lives of individual poets. An actor reads the poems.
Writers’ Florence
- Florence has a remarkable place in the history of English literature as so many important writers visited the city or lived here.
- See places they frequented and inhabited, which inspired them and which they described.
- Attention is also paid to American, French and German writers, and to great Italians.
