Walking Tours
Ever since the Peripatetic School was founded in 335 BC, contemplation and exercise have successfully enhanced one another. MRT’s walking tours, whether along traditional pilgrimage routes or lesser-known country trails, combine intellectual and aesthetic nourishment, while the fine restaurants and hotels en route ensure physical reserves are constantly topped up too. Good for the spirit, good for the body, good for the mind: how’s that for an Aristotelian dialectic? All our small-group tours are led by expert lecturers, chosen for their companionability and communication skills as well as their scholarship.
Walking in Sicily
- A new tour for 2012.
- Six walks of between 4 and 9 miles through immensely varied scenery, from the lava fields of Etna to salt lake flats along the coast.
- Much of archaeological interest, and visits to Syracuse, greatest of west Greek cities, and to the Baroque city of Noto.

- Two varied islands; one renowned for ancient sites, the other for Byzantine and Ottoman architecture.
Walking in Tuscany
- Five half-day walks through some of the most stunningly beautiful countryside in Europe.
- Visits a selection of minor masterpieces of art and architecture and vernacular building.
- Based in two tiny towns in topographically-diverse areas of Tuscany.
Stonehenge
- Includes many of Europe’s finest Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age monuments.
- Special out-of-hours visit to Stonehenge (subject to confirmation).
- Ranges through Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset, though one hotel throughout.
Walking Hadrian’s Wall
- The archaeology and history of the largest Roman construction in northern Europe.
- The most spectacular stretches accessible only on foot, this is also a walking tour through some of the most magnificent scenery in England.
- Excursions from coast to coast include all the major Roman sites and relevant museums.
The Cotswolds
- Nine walks through some of the loveliest countryside in the world with stops to enjoy buildings and landscape features.
- A carefully selected itinerary which favours the lesser-visited and less accessible places over some of the more touristy ones.
- Several outstanding gardens are a feature, as are manor houses and a handful of the finest parish churches in the country.
Walking in Cornwall
- Walks on most days through some of the most beautiful scenery in England.
- Visits to gardens, country houses, art galleries, and historic towns and villages. Maritime history, literary associations and the history of the county feature.
- Attention is also paid to geology, botany, ecology and other aspects of the natural world.
Walking to Santiago
- The last great pilgrimage route in Christendom which still attracts walkers; scenically wonderful with much fine architecture.
- Selected sections from the Pyrenees through northern Spain to Compostela.
- Walking in comfort: good hotels; luggage transferred separately; maximum of 15 participants.
Walking the Danube
- Combines country walks through some of the glorious countryside of the Danube valley with concerts of The Danube Music Festival.
- Six concerts and five half–day country walks.
The Schubertiade
- Four Lieder recitals with Bostridge, Karg, Güra, Damrau
- Four chamber concerts: two with Cuarteto Casals, all Schubert, and two including Baiba Skride, Sol Gabetta and Bertrand Chamayou
- A piano recital with Martin Stadtfeld
I thought it was an ideal mix of concerts, recitals, lectures and walks.
Our lecturer was excellent. His informal style talks were interesting; his leadership on the walks excellent.I relished it all. The mixture of walking, visiting interesting buildings and music was lovely.
