The Renaissance in Castile & León
- Some of the greatest examples of Spanish Renaissance painting, sculpture and architecture.
- A carefully-constructed tour picking out the masterpieces of the region, some of them in remote and rarely visited towns.
- Mediaeval and Baroque art and architecture are subsidiary themes.
- Designed to precede the Castile Music Festival, the tour arrives in Burgos during the afternoon of 11th June.
Art historians still find it hard to believe that Spain experienced the Renaissance. And yet a fascinating artistic movement was to develop in Spain in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and particularly in Castile and León where the arts flourished under the patronage of the Church.
Sculptors from across Europe executed ambitious schemes for the cathedrals, churches and convents of the region, while locally-born Alonso Berruguete studied in Rome under Michelangelo and returned to Spain to create a highly original style which integrated the expressive qualities of Gothic art with the beauty of the Renaissance.
