HOTELS
In Bordeaux (5 nights) a splendid, recently renovated 18th-century building, centrally located opposite the Grand Théâtre. Rooms are small but comfortable and well appointed. Excellent breakfast. In Pauillac, Médoc (2 nights) a converted 18th-century mansion, surrounded by vineyards, part of the Relais and Châteaux group. Décor is minimalist. There is an excellent restaurant.
HOW STRENUOUS?
Sure-footedness is essential on the cobbled streets of Bordeaux and the steep inclines of St Emilion. Average distance by coach per day: 50 miles.
