Gastronomic Bordeaux - Food & Wine in Aquitaine
- Visit the key vine growing areas of Bordeaux: Médoc, Graves, Saint-Emilion and Sauternes.
- Meet winemakers in a hand-picked group of beautiful châteaux.
- Dine in the private dining room of one of the most spectacular 1855 Grand Cru Classé châteaux in the Médoc.

DAY 1
Bordeaux. Fly at c. 1.30pm from London Gatwick to Bordeaux. Dine in a traditional bistro on the quai. First of five nights in Bordeaux.
DAY 2
Bordeaux. Morning guided visit of the historic centre of the city. Among the major 18th-century architectural schemes are the magnificent Grand Théâtre, the first to be dignified with a monumental exterior, and the Place du Parlement and Place de la Bourse which overlooks the broad River Garonne. The Cathédrale St André is Gothic, the choir a good example of the rayonnant style. In the afternoon attend an introduction to tasting Bordeaux wines before dining at Jean-Marie Amat’s 1 Michelin starred restaurant. Overnight Bordeaux.
DAY 3
Saint Emilion. One of the most attractive towns in Aquitaine, medieval St Emilion straddles two hillsides and is built out of the local golden-coloured stone. Visit the bakery home to the most famous macarons of the region, whose recipe dates back to 1620, and taste a Premier Grand Cru Classé at a nearby château. Spend some free time visiting the subterranean, rock-hewn église monolithe and the collegiate church which has a fine cloister. Overnight Bordeaux.
DAY 4
Bordeaux, Sauternes region. Free morning to explore Bordeaux’s Sunday market, the excellent Decorative Arts Museum, housed in a beautiful 18th-century mansion, or the Musée des Beaux-Arts which includes work by Titian, Rubens, Chardin and Matisse. The Sauternes area to the south-east of Bordeaux, where vines have been grown since Roman times, offer some of the prettiest scenery in Aquitaine. Have lunch at a top Sauternes château with one of the top specialists in the ageing of white wines. Visit the Italian formal gardens of the Château de Malle in the afternoon. Overnight Bordeaux.
DAY 5
Arachon, Biganos. All day excursion to the coastal town of Arcachon. Take a boat trip across the bay and taste oysters in Le Canon. Experience the fabrication of the Caviar d’Aquitaine and sample the result. Final night in Bordeaux.
DAY 6
Médoc, Pauillac. Drive north into the flat landscape of the Médoc which borders the Atlantic and the Gironde, source of some of Bordeaux’s premier reds. Tasting and light lunch at a famous Margaux château. Sample the Sarments du Médoc, elegant chocolate twigs with various flavours. Visit the picturesque hamlet of Bages, a reconstruction of the village in which winegrower Jean-Michel Cazes spent his childhood. Dinner in the private dining room of a top Pauillac château. First of two nights in Pauillac.
DAY 7
Médoc. Further explore the Médoc châteaux by coach including the village of St Estèphe with its delightful Romanesque church and see horses working in the vineyards. Visit a Médoc château and taste its wines. Dine in the hotel’s 2 Michelin star restaurant.
DAY 8
Return to Bordeaux for lunch and a late afternoon flight, arriving at London Gatwick at c. 5.15pm.
