The Chilingirian Quartet is one of the world’s most celebrated and widely-travelled ensembles, renowned for its thrilling interpretations of the great quartets. Now nearing completion of its fourth decade, the quartet continues to tour, record and teach, amassing one of the music world’s most impressive resumés.
The dates of this weekend fall almost to the day of the Chilingirian Quartet’s first concert performance forty years ago. For these special concerts, they perform a programme including three of Beethoven’s string quartets. Cellist Bernard Gregor-Smith joins for the first concert for two quintets: Schubert’s String Quintet and Boccherini’s Cello Quintet in C. Haydn, Ravel, Brahms and Mozart also feature during the weekend.
Talks on the music are given by Richard Wigmore before each concert. Music writer, lecturer and broadcaster for BBC Radio 3, he also writes for The Daily Telegraph, BBC Music Magazine and Gramaphone and regularly leads music tours for Martin Randall Travel.
