ITINERARY
DAY 1

Fly at c. 10.00am from London Heathrow to Zurich. Stop at Winterthur to see the recently renovated Old Master and Impressionist paintings of the Oskar Reinhart Collection, beautifully displayed in the collector’s home in woods outside the city. Drive through Switzerland and into Austria, arriving mid-afternoon at Mellau in the lovely upland landscape of the Bregenzerwald.

DAY 2

Feldkirch. Introductory lecture. Drive down the valley to Feldkirch, a little town built at a narrowing of the valley of the River Ill, the historic buildings, arcaded streets and network of alleys nestling beneath high limestone cliffs. A guided tour includes mediaeval defences, town hall and Gothic cathedral (altarpiece by Wolf Huber). Drive directly to Schwarzenberg. Recital in the Angelika-Kaufmann-Saal (where all the concerts are held) with Christiane Karg (soprano) and Wolfram Rieger (piano): Lieder by Schubert and Wolf. Dinner between concerts. Concert with Cuarteto Casals: Schubert String Quartets: D94 in D; D68 in B; D810 in D minor, ‘Death and the maiden’.

DAY 3

Bregenz. Morning lecture. Visit the capital of the Vorarlberg on Lake Constance. Begin in the upper town, the picturesque older part, and then walk down to the lower town for lakeside walks, museum and art gallery. Return to Mellau in the early afternoon, drive to Schwarzenberg. Piano recital with Martin Stadtfeld: Schubert’s and Rachmaninov’s ‘Six Moments Musicaux’, D78 and Op.18. Dinner between concerts. Recital with Ian Bostridge (tenor) and Julius Drake (piano): selected Lieder by Schubert.

DAY 4

Birnau, Meersburg, Konstanz. Drive along the German side of Lake Constance to the pilgrimage church at Birnau, one of the most delectably decorated of all Rococo buildings. Leisurely lunch break in Meersburg, a lovely old town on a rise beside the lake. Cross the lake by ferry to Konstanz, and spend a couple of hours in the unspoilt old city and its mediaeval minster. Drive through Switzerland back to Mellau for some free time. Late-afternoon lecture then drive to Schwarzenberg. Evening concert with Baiba Skride (violin), Sol Gabetta (cello) and Bertrand Chamayou (piano): Schönberg, ‘Verklärte Nacht’; Schubert, Piano Trio in E flat, D929.

TESTIMONIALS
An excellent and erudite leader, always a pleasure to be with.
P. L., Berkshire
All the meals were lighter and better prepared than my previous visits to Austria. The restaurants provided good service and we always had time for a gentle walk back to the concert hall.
J. E., Wiltshire
Wonderful music, superb performers.
H. E., Wiltshire
I cannot speak too highly of our lecturer. The scope of his knowledge of, and interest in, all kinds of classical music were most impressive and his relaxed and friendly approach contributed much to my enjoyment.
R. C., East Sussex
A really great tour which far exceeded my expectations’. Well done MRT!
A. G., Dorset
