Professor Cathie Carmichael

Historian of Southeastern Europe with a focus on national identity, borders, violence, micro-history, the environment, and popular culture. Her work has been translated into Slovene, Italian and Turkish. Her books include The Habsburg Garrison Complex in Trebinje: A Lost World (2024) and the co-edited Cambridge History of Nationhood and Nationalism (2023). She is currently undertaking a project on the bird reserve in Hutovo blato.
