Dr John Merrington

Dr John Merrington is a historian of medieval Europe. His first book (forthcoming with Oxford University Press) investigates moral ideas about the five senses in the early Middle Ages. John has published articles in Early Medieval Europe and The English Historical Review about the sixth-century historian Gregory of Tours, and about the Venerable Bede — who is often considered ‘the Father of English History’. He regularly writes reviews for the Times Literary Supplement. Between 2018 and 2025, John was a Prize Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. He has also held research positions at Princeton University, Durham University, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
