Travel Information: Entry Exit System (EES) & European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) update
Entry Exit System (EES) update
From 12th October passengers from countries outside the Schengen zone (eg. UK, USA, Canada, Aus, NZ) travelling into and out of Schengen countries (most of the EU) will be subject to extra checks at borders:
- Giving fingerprints
- Photos taken
This replaces the current procedure of passport stamping.
What you need to know
This will likely mean longer queues at passport control when entering and leaving. It will be rolled out gradually, and each country may roll it out differently, meaning it is hard to predict the level of disruption.
European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) update
In 2026, the EU will introduce the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)
When ETIAS is introduced you will need to:
- Apply for authorisation to enter Schengen area countries if using a UK passport.
- Provide personal information and details about your trip, and pay a 20 Euro fee.
What you need to know
No action is required by travellers at this point. The European Union will announce details prior to the system launch.
